I love peach iced tea. I only discovered it in the last couple of years when I bought a pack of well reduced and out of date Little Miracles Organic Energy Black Tea and Peach. I was hooked and quickly bought more of the cheap bottles. As pure and natural as they are, sweetened only with agave and fruit concentrates, it still packed 90 calories a bottle and I could drink 5 in a day – that’s 450 calories just on liquid. So, I stopped drinking them so regularly and now very rarely get one of I see them. I only ever see them in some health food shops and one particular very off the beaten track petrol station which is a bit random!
The other day, I needed a drink and was craving something other than water, all there was to buy from was a machine. They had a Lipton Peach Ice Tea so I gave it a go, it was delicious but I couldn’t stop thinking about the sugar, calories and flavourings in this all to easy to drink, seemingly light option of a soft drink. So, I decided to make my own.
I looked on Pinterest and there is a single recipe that’s everywhere, who knows where it originated from. It was basically boiled peaches with sugar and water and mixed with tea and ice. I decided to switch things up with the added flavour of roasting the peaches (using a lot more also), adding vanilla and using only stevia to sweeten it.
The result? Guilt free iced tea bursting with real, natural peach flavour and goodness, and just 40 calories per serving!

Ingredients: Serves 6
For the peach syrup:
- 6 ripe peaches
- 1 cup water
- seeds from half a vanilla pod or 1 tsp good quality vanilla extract
- 3 tbsp NuNaturals simple syrup
- 1 tea bag per serving (black, green, herbal)
- Preheat the oven to 180’c/350’f and halve and stone the peaches. Place on a lined baking tray cut side up and roast for 20-30 minutes until lightly coloured and softened. If you have time, turn the oven off and leave the peaches to cool inside, otherwise remove and leave to cool enough to handle.
- Roughly chop the peaches and add to a pan with the water, vanilla and syrup. Bring to a boil, then lower the heat to a gentle simmer and allow to cook for 10 minutes, mashing the peaches throughout.
- Leave the syrup to cool for as long as possible and if you have a high speed blender, blend the fruit and syrup to extract as much flavour as possible. Strain the syrup through a sieve, pressing on the solids to get as much as possible. You can keep the fruit puree to add to smoothies, on oats or in muffins!
- Now you can either make a large pitcher of iced tea or you can store the syrup for individual servings which is what I do. To do this, place the syrup in a sterilised jar and store in the fridge for at least a week, add a couple of tablespoons of the syrup to a glass, top up with cooled brewed tea from 1 tea bag (I prefer rooibos) and about a cup or more of boiling water, add ice and extra fresh or roasted peaches if you have them.
- For a large pitcher, brew 6 cups of tea with 4-6 tea bags (depending on how strong you like it), add to a large jug with the syrup, ice and extra peach slices. Taste and top up with more fresh water to dilute if desired.
