DIY Apple Candles!

At this time of year, many of you, like me, will have more apples (and pears) than you can make apple pies, apple sauce, apple cakes, fruit salads or simply bite into. I have the extra issue that Mat is allergic to apples so it’s basically me against this influx of ruby red fruit.

The bunnies help a little but as them eating an inch of apple is the equivalent of us eating something like 15 whole apples, their intake is limited and thus they barely make a dent.

The degus are allowed an even smaller amount due to their genetic risk of diabetes.

The chickens are just not interested – ‘what’s this? Where’s the corn mum?’. It goes something like that…

So, I have come to the conclusion with a freezer bursting of apple sauce and frozen berries, to use my apples outside of the norms of, well, eating them…

It takes just a couple of basic tools and a few minutes to make these cute apple candles that are so cosy for Autumn and look adorable on any mantelpiece.

What you need:

• Apples
• Tealight candles
• A pointed sharp knife
• A metal teaspoon

How to make them:

1. Remove the candle from the tin casing. Place the casing upside down on to the top of the apple (with the sharp rim pressing against the apple). Hold in place with one hand and use the other to trace a mark around the case with the tip of the knife.
2. Remove the case and then cut into the apple in a straight downwards motion following the line, roughly the depth of the candle. Use the spoon to flip out the apple, it should come out in one circle piece. Use the spoon to scoop out any inner bumps and scoop deeper if necessary. Place the candle into the hole.
3. Place on top of something to catch drips before lighting and of course, please be careful. 😀
